NCCM CALLS FOR ACCOUNTABILITY AFTER DIVISIVE RHETORIC REPOSTED BY MANITOBA PC LEADERSHIP CANDIDATE
The reposted message, which states, “We must stop Muslim Obby Khan from becoming Conservative Leader,” targets Obby Khan solely on the basis of his Muslim faith.
This type of divisive rhetoric is a clear example of Islamophobia and has no place in Canadian politics. It is not only harmful to the candidate but to the wider public, eroding deeply held Canadian values of inclusivity and respect.
“As Canadians prepare to mark January 29th—a day of mourning for the six worshippers lost to terrorism at the Quebec City mosque attack—we are reminded of the devastating consequences of Islamophobia,” said Stephen Brown, NCCM. “It is crucial for political leaders to unite Canadians, not divide them.”
NCCM alongside the Manitoban Muslim community is calling on Mr. Daudrich to issue a public apology - to both Mr. Khan and to the larger Manitoban Muslim community - for amplifying this harmful rhetoric.
We also urge the Progressive Conservative Party of Manitoba and its Leadership Election Committee to condemn this behavior unequivocally and to take requisite action that ensures such incidents are not tolerated within the party.
Our political institutions and processes must always reflect our values as Canadians.
