Police warn of 'distraction thefts' targeting Muslim community
Since October, there have apparently been a number of thefts where suspects approach a victim in malls, parking lots and stores.
Police said suspects engage the victims in conversation by using a greeting or asking where the nearest mosque is, or by asking for money or assistance.
As this occurs, the suspects reportedly steal from the victim's pockets, bags or body.
Police said there are also reports of suspects travelling in groups of four in a vehicle, approaching victims with an offer to sell them jewelry.
Once they get close enough, the jewelry is removed from the victim and replaced with costume jewelery.
The victims often don't realize anything has been stolen until after the suspects have already left, police said.
How to avoid theft
Police said people should try to conceal jewelry under clothing or ensure it can't easily be removed, and to be cautious of strangers who don't respect personal space or touch you in anyway.
"If someone is close enough to put a necklace on you, they are likely too close," police said in a news release.
People should be aware of their surroundings and report any suspicious activity to police, with the recommendation to remember suspect descriptors like gender, age, ethnicity, height, build, weight, clothing, marks, scars, tattoos, vehicle, license plate, accent, method and what was said.
Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 416-808-4300, or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS (8477), or at www.222tips.com.
